Gross merchandise value growth of 100 marketplaces, 2018- 2019
Marketplace Growth
Marketplaces are popular online shopping platforms, as customers are attracted to the large number of products available, typically at lower prices. The world’s largest, operated by Alibaba and Amazon, dominate the industry. But there are a number of marketplaces, many of which sell products in a particular retail category, that are growing sales at a rapid pace.
• The top online marketplaces in the world sold $2.03 trillion in 2019.
• Gross merchandise sales grew 22% last year
• 60 marketplaces are based in the U.S., and they grew sales 18% in 2019
• 54 of the 100 top marketplaces launched in 2011 or later
Sales on marketplace sites, like those operated by Alibaba, Amazon, eBay and others, accounted for 58% of global web sales in 2019, according to Digital Commerce 360’s analysis. The growth of marketplace eCommerce sales is a reason many large retailers, including Target Corp., are launching their own marketplaces.
